Air-Fryer Dirty BBQ Meatball Subs

This is what happens when a meatball sub spends a weekend at a smokehouse. Juicy beef meatballs. Sticky barbecue sauce. Melted cheese.

Air-Fryer Dirty BBQ Meatball Subs preparation stage

You’ll Need

500g beef mince
1 egg
50g breadcrumbs
1 small onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, grated

Meatball Seasoning
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp sea salt
½ tsp black pepper

BBQ Sauce
4 tbsp BBQ sauce
1 tbsp honey
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

To Serve
4 soft sub rolls
150g grated mozzarella
50g grated cheddar

Optional But Dangerous
Pickles
Jalapeños
Crispy onions
Chipotle mayo

Method

Preheat your air fryer to 190°C.

Add the beef mince, egg, breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to a bowl.

Mix thoroughly until fully combined.

Roll into 12 evenly sized meatballs.

Place into the air fryer basket in a single layer.

Air fry for 10–12 minutes, shaking gently halfway through.

While the meatballs cook, combine the BBQ sauce, honey, and Worcestershire sauce.

Toss the cooked meatballs in the sauce until fully coated.

Return to the fryer for 3–4 minutes until the sauce becomes sticky and caramelised.

Slice the sub rolls open and lightly toast them for 1 minute.

Load each roll with BBQ meatballs.

Top generously with mozzarella and cheddar.

Return to the fryer for 2–3 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles.

Finish with pickles, jalapeños, crispy onions, or chipotle mayo if using.

Serve immediately while still molten.

Lad Tip: A proper meatball sub should require a tactical eating strategy. If nothing falls out during the first few bites, you've probably not used enough meatballs.
