You’ll Need

4 hot cross buns, split and quartered
100ml double cream
40g softened butter
45g caster sugar
100g dark chocolate, chopped
Finely grated zest of 1 orange
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
250ml whole milk
To Finish
Warm orange marmalade
Chocolate curls
Optional But Dangerous
Hot custard
Vanilla ice cream

Method

Preheat the air fryer to 160°C and butter a 16cm ovenproof dish.

Butter the hot cross bun pieces and arrange them in the dish with the chocolate.

Whisk the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, orange zest and vanilla.

Pour over the buns and press them down gently.

Leave to soak for 10 minutes.

Cover loosely with foil and air fry for 11 minutes.

Remove the foil and cook for another 5-6 minutes until the top is crisp and the custard is just set.

Rest for 4 minutes and brush with warm marmalade.

Lad Tip: Hot cross buns are already spiced and glazed, so they do half the work. This is the rare leftover that improves after being ignored for a day.
