Air-Fryer Roti Canai Flatbreads preparation stage

You’ll Need

300g self-raising flour
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp melted butter
150ml warm water
1 tbsp vegetable oil

To Serve
Curry sauce
Dhal
Chicken curry
Extra melted butter

Optional but Dangerous
Condensed milk drizzle
Sugar sprinkle
Spicy sambal

Method

Add the flour and salt to a large bowl.

Stir through the melted butter and warm water until a soft dough forms.

Knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Divide into 4 equal dough balls.

Lightly coat each ball with vegetable oil and leave to rest for 20 minutes.

Roll each dough ball into a thin circle on a lightly floured surface.

Fold the dough in from each side to create rough square flatbreads.

Preheat your air fryer to 190°C.

Lightly spray the basket with oil and place one flatbread inside.

Air fry for 4–5 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden with lightly crisped layers.

Repeat with the remaining flatbreads.

Brush lightly with melted butter before serving. Serve immediately while warm and flaky.

Lad Tip: A proper Roti Canai should tear into soft flaky layers. If you manage to stop at one, you're showing a level of self-control none of us witnessed anywhere in Kuala Lumpur.
